7 Ways to Encourage Muslim Children to Give Charity

Teach the Importance of Charity in Islam

Start by teaching your child why giving charity is important, the different types of charity such as Zakat and Sadaqah, and how Zakat is a pillar of Islam. Explain how it helps the less fortunate,

earns reward from Allah, and purifies one’s wealth.

Be a Good Role Model

Children learn best by observing the actions of their parents and caregivers. Therefore, it is essential to demonstrate the importance of giving charity to children by giving regularly yourself. Involve your child in the process, and explain how and why you are giving.

Make Giving Fun and Encourage Creativity

Encourage children to come up with their own creative ways to give charity. For example, they could organise a bake sale and donate the proceeds to a charity of their choice.

Celebrate Their Efforts

Praise the efforts of children who give charity, no matter how little the amount. This can also be done by giving them small rewards such as stickers or a certificate of appreciation. This positive reinforcement can encourage them to continue giving charity in the future.

Make it a Regular Family Activity

Ask your child to help decide where to donate and how much to give. Involve them in activities such as volunteering at a local soup kitchen, collecting donations, or participating in a charity walk.

Encourage Acts of Kindness

Encourage your child to perform acts of kindness - no matter how small - such as sharing toys or helping a neighbour, and to give from their own pocket money or savings. This could also involve creating a charity jar or box that children can contribute to every week or month.

Read Islamic Stories

Share stories of the Prophet (SAW) and his companions who were known for their generosity and charitable deeds. These stories can inspire children and motivate them to follow in their footsteps, and can be a great way to teach your child about the virtues of generosity.

In The Golden Trail, we join Adam and Anisah in the month of Ramadan as they discover a treasure box containing gold coins and a note with instructions that they are duty bound to follow. When opened, a glittering light escapes from the box, taking Adam and Anisah on a journey to an unknown destination. A beautifully illustrated story that demonstrates the life changing power of Zakat and the importance of generosity, community spirit and compassion. A perfect Ramadan read!

Through activities such as preparing a gift box for homeless individuals, writing jokes on the pavement and visiting and interviewing an elderly neighbour, children and parents will broaden their understanding of the concept of charity and be able to see its impact on people’s lives. A wonderful gift that builds a lasting love for charity!
